I mentioned a bit ago that Small was very much resisting anything reading related. Anytime I ask him anything about reading he says things like "I can't do it", "it makes my head hurt" and "it's too hard". So I've not been mentioning it - having faith that he will come around when he is ready, and if I push him he might not enjoy it.
This morning I was reading a thread on a home ed fb group and Small was having snuggles. Suddenly he said... "Send?" and pointed to the bottom right corner of the screen. He'd read it himself! He asked why it said Send, so I explained that you type a message and then click Send to send it to the group. He asked if he could send a message too, so I started a thread, and then he typed his name and sent it as a comment. After I explained in another comment what was going on, a couple of other home edders commented saying well done to him, and he wrote "fank yoo" all by himself in reply to them! I'm really proud of him.
This afternoon, after playing on Minecraft for a bit, he bounced downstairs and asked if he could do some drawing, and once he'd got the paper out he asked me how to spell 'night vision'. I asked why and he said he wanted to make labels for his potions that he'd made. So I asked if he could fetch the potions downstairs, and I cut up the piece of paper into labels.
He brought down 9 duplo potions that he'd made, and we slowly worked our way through them deciding what potion it should be, and then he wrote the name on the piece of paper, and I put a little blob of blutac on the duplo so he could stick the paper on. These are the potions:
Gold star if you can correctly guess what they all are! ;)

I keep reading 'poison' instead of potion ;) lol
ReplyDeleteLOL, definitely not poison ;)
DeleteJust found your blog and so enjoyed your posts. We HEed our two and they've grown and flown now but I'm still writing about it to help support others. I think you are right to let Small come to reading when ready rather than put pressure on him - in fact, it looks like it's already happening doesn't it! Have fun - we certainly did!
ReplyDeleteThank you Ross! I regularly read your posts, and recommended a friend read your books just the other week :)
DeleteI am looking forward to him reading, I want him to do it because he wants to and enjoys it, not because he's being forced to. No pressure here :) just patience and fun!
